Nedvidek Family
Located on a hill, surrounded by an old, bent and worn iron fence, a small private cemetery in the Town of Washington recalls the days when it was not unusual to bury family members on the farm. A warranty deed dated March 26, 1897 [La Crosse County Register of Deeds, volume 107 page 94], records the transaction of Emil & Frances Clements et al. to Oktakar Nedvidek of Charles City, Virginia, for $1.00.
To quote from the deed, the land "...now used a private burying ground, in which are buried the remains of Wenzel Nedvidek, late of the town of Washington in said county of La Crosse, deceased; John W. Nedvidek, now deceased, formerly residing in said town of Washington, but at his death a resident of the state of Virginia; also the first wife and five of the children of said John W. Nedvidek, deceased; said tract of land is enclosed by an iron fence 36 ft. long north and south of 16 ft. wide east and west; together with a right of way over and across said 40 acre tract from the public highway to the said burying ground."
In the History of La Crosse County (1881), a Nedvidek family was documented as coming to the Town of Washington by 1855. The Town of Washington maintains the cemetery, occasionally clearing away brush. Since it is located at the top of a hill, the climb is moderately difficult, particularly from the south side, as one has to manuoever through cow manure and barbed wire fencing to get there. Only one small gravestone remains which says:
