Abstract
Print copy of "Hinterland Dreams and Midwestern Rails: Public Power and Railroading in Nineteenth-Century La Crosse, Wisconsin," by Eric John Morser (2009). The article is an examination of how smaller cities took agency to affect railroad routes in the Midwest through a case study of La Crosse, Wis. In closing, Morser explains that historians need to begin including smaller cities, such as La Crosse, Wis., into their research of railroad expansion into the west in order to gain full insight into their formation. Morser also published a book in 2011 with similar themes called "Hinterland Dreams: The Political Economy of a Midwestern City," under the University of Pennsylvania Press.
