Abstract

Resolutions and reports adopted by the City of La Crosse (Wisconsin) Common Council, December 1932-December 1981, arranged by file number in chronological order. Records are available in both original paper format and on positive 35 mm microfilm. Oversize documents before 1981 are available in paper only, except file numbers 31734-33067 (1970-1971) were microfilmed along with the original legal sized documents and are thus interfiled. Microfilming ceased at the end of 1981, and beginning with 1982 the resolutions are available on a product in the Office of the City Clerk called LaserFiche.

Historical Note

In late 1932 the Office of the City Clerk began to organize approved Common Council resolutions and reports by file number. These numbers are assigned sequentially. The only indexing of these resolutions is a card file which is arranged by subject (e.g. parks, library, etc.) and which also includes ordinance numbers and referred matters, 1932-present. The resolutions and reports are also mentioned in the Council books or proceedings.

Older resolutions (circa 1856-1932) are housed in the La Crosse Public Library Archives and are processed and arranged by Council committees, such as street lighting, judiciary, parks, public utilities, etc. These are also in the Library’s archival collection of city records. Refer to the holdings guide or the library catalog for a complete list.

Scope and Contents

The records are approved resolutions and reports of the City of La Crosse (Wisconsin) Common Council, Dec. 1932-November 1986 and are arranged by file number. More current files can be found at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall.

Oversized items attached to a resolution were removed from the collection to facilitate microfilming of the record series for resolutions before 1970 (files #1-37116) EXCEPT for files #31734-33067 which were microfilmed along with the legal sized files. "See references" have been placed in the file where this has occurred.

However, a group was missed in the filming so there is no indication on the microfilm that an oversize file exists for the following resolution file numbers: 28517, 28691, 29003, 30774, 30945, 31838, 31842, 31945, 32588, 32590, 32591, 32592. The oversize items are available for use only in paper form.

Microfilm exists of resolutions 1-40920 1932-1981 December. Starting with resolution 40921, the resolutions ceased to be microfilmed and were entered into the LaserFiche system at City Hall.

1932-1950 resolutions microfilmed through funding provided by a local records grant administered by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Oct. 1993-Aug. 1994. Master negatives are stored at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; positive and negative copies are held at the La Crosse Public Library's Archives & Local History area.

1951-1981 resolutions microfilmed through operating budget funds of the City Clerk. Master negatives are stored at Northern Micrographics, La Crosse, WI, and positive copies are held at the La Crosse Public Library's Archives & Local History area.

1932-1986 November resolutions exist in paper at the La Crosse Public Library Archives.

1986 December-present exist only at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall.
