Historical Note

The Veterans of World War I Auxiliary La Crosse Barracks 1650 was founded March 24, 1959, by 37 women and initially met in the Eagles Club rooms. Rosella Miller served as the first president. Other officer positions included secretary, treasurer, 1st and 2nd vice presidents, chaplain, guard, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trustees, conductress, and later, historian. The La Crosse Barracks 1650 was the second auxiliary to be installed in Wisconsin.

The auxiliary held regular meetings and fundraisers, and attended state conventions. The Veterans of World War I Auxiliary La Crosse Barracks 1650 disbanded in 1989.

Concerning the folder of biographical material about Arthur G. Mossong, a note on the original folder stated that Mr. Mossong wanted the material to be given to the La Crosse chapter's historian to be included in the history. Born in 1897, Mossong was a lifelong resident of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He helped organize Veterans of World War I and Department of Wisconsin, and the Fond du Lac County Barracks 1354. Mossong died in 1981.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists mainly of eight scrapbooks covering 1959-1985, with a smattering of other information about the local chapter. The scrapbooks are arranged in chronological order and include meeting minutes, membership lists, newspaper articles, and photographs.

Other documents not included in the scrapbooks consist of an interesting folder containing biographical material and photographs of Arthur G. Mossong; correspondence from the Department of Wisconsin secretary regarding the annual state convention 1984-1989; handwritten notes that serve as meeting minutes 1984-1988; membership lists 1971-1989; and lastly three issues of the state WWI veterans newspaper from 1984-1986.

When the collection was donated to the Library in 1997, past president Alice Herr remembered there being a total of four boxes of records at one time, but could only locate two of the boxes.
