Biographical Note

This music was commissioned as the finale for La Crosse's centennial celebration that was called "Centennial Kladeidoscope." The composer, Wayne R. Bohrnstedt, was a graduate of Logan High School and Northwestern University where he earned his bachelors and masters degrees. He earned his doctorate at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

At the time of this event, 1948, Bohrnstedt was an instructor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Bohrnstedt left Bowling Green and moved in 1953 to teach at the University of Redlands School of Music. He retired in 1993.

According to an article in the Redlands Daily Facts posted January 7, 2014, Bohrnstedt's music has been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Eastman-Rochester Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Riverside Symphony and the Kristiansand Symphony in Norway.

The "Ballad for La Crosse, Op. 18," manuscript musical score composed by Wayne R. Bohrnstedt, parts included in the collection include the conductor's score, woodwind section parts, brass section parts, percussion section parts, the piano accompaniment with vocal parts, and string section parts. Some biographical materials on Bohrstedt and the event for which the music was commissioned are also included with the piano accompaniment and vocal parts.
